“The ‘WHY’ is always more important than the ‘WHAT’”, says Rafael Asvolinsque. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rafael recognizes that every day is a new opportunity to work hard and achieve the dreams he has set for himself since a very young age. Starting at 11 years old Rafael has played as both an indoor and beach volleyball player alongside some of Brazil’s top rated players, which include Olympic Medalists and World Champions.Playing with such high level players, was just one dream achieved by Rafael. He was also able to pursue a career in coaching such players. His love for coaching brought him to the U.S. in 2018 to explore the new avenues and experiences the game of volleyball could offer him.
Since Rafael arrived in California, he has started coaching athletes of all levels, both men and women. His passion as an international player had no option but to spill over into his passion for coaching and instilling that same desire and love for the game into those he teaches. As an investment into his own career, Rafael started pursuing a degree in Sports Coaching, which will only equip him with more tools to use for teaching players at all levels. He truly believes that volleyball not only helps support a healthy and active lifestyle physically, but it encompasses the values of teamwork, dedication, and respect of self and others.
With any sport, passion is only a small piece of the greater picture. The development of proper technique is what creates a strong foundation for any athlete pursuing a career in their chosen athletic arena. Rafael takes great pride in having the ability to teach technique and break down the movements of volleyball into very detailed instruction. His extensive knowledge of the game made him a great player and now makes him an even better coach.
Rafael states, “I run through the marathon we call ‘LIFE’, with no rush. I know every opportunity that presents itself is one I can use to help develop skill and character. Believing that all things work together for good, I know that life will shape us to be the best person we possibly can be and that is the person who will cross the finish line with a head held high.”
