Bela is coming off a National top 8 finish at Boys Open Nationals (14-1 boys team) and led his girls 17-2 team into the top 7 teams for the SCVA. His 17-2 girls team qualified for USA division at Girls Nationals and earned a bid for National division due to the high ranking at SCVA region. His boys team earned 3 medals at different National level tournaments this past season.
Bela came from Serbia, a small country that’s been ranked top five volleyball nations in the world for the past 25 years, for both men and women. He played there professionally for more than 10 years. His teams took part in the European Champion League and were National Cup winners for several years. Bela was also a member of the Former Yugoslavian National Team (Serbia was part of Yugoslavia), where he played as an outside hitter.
A back injury ended his playing career, which led him to coaching. He started as an assistant coach with his former professional club in Belgrade, Serbia. Upon his arrival in San Diego in 2001, Bela served for two years as the head coach for the Point Loma High School Girls Varsity team. He has coached at the club level in Southern California ever since. For two years he had coached at Sunwest Volleyball Club, Girls 16s and 17s age category, and after that, Bela has been coaching with Epic Volleyball Club since it’s foundation in 2003. He has extensive experience in working with Girls and Boys teams of all age groups.
Bela has coached different age groups (Girls and Boys teams) with Coast VBC for the last several seasons and took his teams to many different National Qualifiers and Junior National Championships. His teams also won several medals in those competitions.
For the past two years Bela has been Head Coach for Boys 13-1 and 14-1 teams, and also the Head Coach of Girls 17-2 team for COAST. His experience also covers leading youth camps and clinics and running private lessons.
Taking from his substantial playing and coaching experience, Bela always has in mind an individual approach to each player, to assure their growth as a player and as a person, regardless of their age and skill level, from an absolute beginner to the highest level of professional volleyball. His passion for the game is something he desires to share with his players.
He is married and has two daughters, Mila (24), is on the path of becoming a neuroscientist, and Gala (19) plays at NCAA Division 1 volleyball at USC college.
