Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Santiago has played volleyball since the age of 10. He played for his middle school and high school teams at Colegio San Carlos, winning back-to-back UNCOLI (Union de Colegios Internacionales) championships during his junior and senior year as a 6 rotation middle blocker. During that last year, his team did not drop a single match. Santiago attended Universidad de Los Andes where he played with the University team before starting to coach.
Santiago moved to the United States to continue his graduate studies in Illinois where he coached high school volleyball for Centennial High School as their freshman head coach and varsity assistant for three years. He also coached for Prime Time Volleyball Club in Champaign, head coaching teams in all of the high school age groups and assisting with a couple of the middle school age group teams. He coached briefly with the Parkland College Cobras before moving to San Diego in the Summer of 2021.
This is Santiago’s Second year at COAST, having head coached a team of 15’s on the girls side and assisted with a 13U team of boys.
Outside of volleyball, Santiago holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics and has competed in international math competitions and helped train other competitors at the same level. He has a passion for teaching and also tutors both kids and adults in mathematics and computer literacy. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and coaching his two-year-old.
