Dis Abelman

Dismas Abelman began his journey in volleyball many years ago on the sands of Mission Beach, San Diego. In his effort to improve as a player, Dis migrated to South Mission Beach, which hosted the top beach players in the region. As his game developed, Dis had the opportunity to train with professional players from the AVP beach tour and the USA National Team, which was housed in San Diego. These efforts resulted in a “AAA” beach rating over multiple years, qualifying for the Manhattan Beach Open in 1995 and a gold medal in the 1997 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

In an effort to improve his volleyball skills and knowledge, Dis moved indoor and played club volleyball at San Diego Mesa College from 1983-1986. His first coaching assignment was at Mission Bay High School in 1988. As an assistant coach to Dave Whittaker, Dis began developing his coaching style with an emphasis on enjoyment and player development. This growth continued as a coach with the San Diego Volleyball Club, coaching players 12 – 15 years of age on both regional and traveling teams. Dis took a hiatus from coaching volleyball to help raise three children, however, remained active in youth sports, coaching and assisting with the administration at the North City Pony youth baseball league. This coaching experience on a recreational level reinforced the belief that youth sports should be a positive experience that extends past the playing field.

Dis joined the coaching staff at COAST Volleyball Club in 2022 when his youngest son started playing indoor volleyball. He assisted with the 14-2s that took third place at the USAV BJNC in Las Vegas. His return to the gym was supported by the positive COAST culture. Dis’ youngest son plays at COAST and serves as a reminder that he will play volleyball his entire life, as long as it is fun. This philosophy is a cornerstone in Dis’ coaching philosophy. Enjoy the process and be confident that improvement will be the result of hard work and a positive attitude. Dis is enjoying the latest chapter in his volleyball life sharing his love for a game that can bring people together and last a lifetime.
