Berkeley has been with COAST Volleyball Club for almost a decade now. He played at COAST for 4 years and began coaching at the club 5 years ago. He attended La Jolla High School where he played 4 years of varsity volleyball and served as captain for two years. As setter, Berkeley led the team to back to back appearances in the San Diego CIF Open Championships, winning the title in his junior year. In his senior year, Berkeley was named an AVCA All-American, CIF First Team, San Diego Section All-Academic Team Captain, and La Jolla High School Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and Valedictorian. In 2018, Berkeley committed to continue his volleyball career at UC San Diego, joining 8 other of his 18-1 club teammates to commit to play at the Division 1 level including UCSD Teammate, Logan Clark.
At UCSD, Berkeley played in every match for his freshman and sophomore seasons as setter, opposite, and serving specialist. At the beginning of his junior year in 2020, Berkeley tore his Achilles taking him out for the season. Berkeley would later tear the same Achilles again, taking him out of his senior season to continue recovering. While injured, Berkeley took statistics during matches for his UCSD teams and served as assistant coach on the bench for some matches. Through the recovery process, Berkeley found success in the classroom and continued to find joy with the sport and pursue his passion for volleyball in the form of coaching. He learned a unique computational code from COAST Coach, Sam Deddeh, that tracks outcomes from every contact amidst a volleyball rally. From this, Berkeley developed a model in excel that calculates advanced volleyball metrics in real time. Berkeley continues to take a data-driven approach to coaching.
In 2022, Berkeley was named Mark Applebaum Scholar Athlete of the Year for having the highest GPA among all athletes at UCSD. He also received the Joel Dean Award, being named Most Outstanding Student in the UCSD Economics Department. He graduated with highest distinction honors in Management Science and with a minor in Law. Throughout his collegiate career, Berkeley has coached elite club players of all ages and will continue to do so as he pursues a Master’s Degree in Finance and plays one final season at UCSD.
