Laura Hendrickson has been an anchor in the San Diego volleyball community since 1984.
Born and raised in San Diego, Laura grew up on the sand. Her father, Hugh B. Martin III, introduced her to beach volleyball at Solana Beach, sparking a lifelong passion for the sport. At Torrey Pines High School, she helped lead her team to CIF Championships, supported by her club experience with San Diego Volleyball Club.
Laura went on to play for Cuesta College, where she won the California State Championship and earned All-American honors in her second year. She later completed her degree in Graphic Design and Marketing at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
After college, Laura was invited to compete in a professional women’s indoor league and went on to play in numerous indoor, grass, and beach tournaments. She joined the Women’s Professional Volleyball Association (WPVA), earning two top-10 finishes, and also captured an Open CBVA title in Playa Del Rey.
Throughout her playing career, Laura trained with some of the game’s most respected coaches and athletes, including Mary Jo Peppler, Dane Selznick, Ana Collier, Sinjin Smith, and Olympic Silver Medalist April Ross.
Today, Laura continues to play and coach with the same passion she’s had since childhood — inspired by the goal to “play until I’m 80.” She’s deeply committed to studying health, functional movement, and performance optimization to maintain strength, flexibility, and longevity in both body and mind.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Laura has built a successful career in graphic design and marketing, continuously expanding her expertise in digital strategy and branding.
She is also the founder of the nonprofit San Diego Beach Improvement Group (SDBIG), which for more than two decades raised funds for beach cleanups, court maintenance, and community events at South Mission Beach. SDBIG has produced and supported beloved tournaments such as the BIG Kahuna, King & Queen of the Beach, and the Annual Polar Bear Classic.
Laura has coached with Epic Volleyball Club and is now thrilled to join Coast Volleyball Club, bringing with her decades of competitive experience, on-court insight, and a holistic coaching philosophy grounded in discipline, health, and a pure love of the game.
