Amaya’s journey with volleyball began in elementary school, almost by chance, when she filled in for a team that needed an extra player. From that moment, she never looked back. Over the next eight years, she played as a setter for several clubs across the Los Angeles area, ultimately ending her career with San Gabriel (SG) Elite. She then attended Pennsylvania State University to study criminology, sociology, and political science. Upon returning home from her first year of college, Amaya transitioned from player to coach, beginning her career on the sidelines.
Currently, Amaya is pursuing her Master of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice at San Diego State University with the goal of becoming a professor and researcher. As a teacher at heart, she emphasizes the importance of learning the basics and progressing to achieve the best results possible. She is dedicated to helping athletes develop not only their technical skills but also their confidence, teamwork, and love for the game she has loved for most of her life.
Outside of academics and coaching, Amaya enjoys spending time with friends, reading, cooking, and going to the beach.
